Question by Dino: Can a business LEGALLY use security cameras anyway they see fit?
I work for a company that has installed security cameras throughout the building and surrounding areas. I was wondering if legally they can use these cameras for their any objective.

Answer by Colanth
Any legal objective. It’s usually illegal to put security cameras in restrooms and dressing areas, etc. You can’t use what you capture with a camera to blackmail someone. You probably can’t use it for advertising. But for any legitimate security reason? Sure.

Of course they can “legally” use them.

  2. Common Sense Says:

    you bet they can

  3. fail Says:

yes, you obviously have something to hide or you wouldnt be asking about it

  4. Dr. Snark Says:

They can’t use them for ANY objective. They’re certainly allowed to use them for security purposes as well as for monitoring their employees. If the cameras record sound then that “might” present a problem in some places. Otherwise you shouldn’t be doing something at work if you don’t want your employer seeing you do it.

Well, there are some limitations about how a business can use a security camera. The security cameras cannot be used in a bathroom, dressing room, or a break room. The security camera cannot be used to obtain private medical records. The video footage of employees cannot be used in commercials without the employee’s approval. If the state has laws against recording audio without a person’s permission, then the camera would not be allowed to record audio. This depends on the state you’re in. Generally, the business is allowed to use the security camera to prevent theft, ensure worker productivity, and ensure that safety procedures are being implemented on the job (if applicable).

Yup they definitely can. Unless it’s a restroom or changing area.
